Some of the best trout fishing in the country can be enjoyed on the Yakima River. The same cool water flowing from the eastern Cascades that is released from reservoirs to irrigate thousands of acres of vineyards and farmlands provides the perfect environment for rainbow trout, brook trout, kokanee and cutthroat, to name a few. Closer to the tri-cities area, where the river warms, you can catch channel catfish and smallmouth bass.
All along the river are clusters of campgrounds and miles of hiking and horse-back riding trails. Backpacking is popular here, as well as all manner of water recreation. For four-season outdoor play, you can’t beat the Yakima River Valley.
